This was lifted from my old blog at Multiply… This was my 2007 Christmas cake.
Prices have been changed – updated to their prices this year.
Sacher Torte according to Wikipedia – “is a chocolate cake, invented by Franz Sacher in 1832 for politician and statesman, Klemens Wenzel von Metternich in Vienna, Austria. It is one of the most famous Viennese culinary specialties.”

Still quoting from Wikipedia – “ The consists of two layers of dense, not overly sweet chocolate (traditionally a sponge cake) with a thin layer of apricot jam in the middle and dark chocolate icing with shreds of chocolate on the top and sides. It is traditionally served with whipped cream without any sugar in it, as most Viennese consider the Sacher torte too “dry” to be eaten on its own.”
“The trademark for the “Original Sachertorte” was registered by the Hotel Sacher, which was built in 1876 by the son of Franz Sacher. The recipe is a well-kept secret. Until 1965, Hotel Sacher was involved in a long legal battle with the pastry shop Demel, who had also produced a cake called the “Original Sachertorte.” Numerous tales have circulated to explain how Demel came by the recipe. The cake at Demel is now called “Demel’s Sachertorte” and differs from the “Original” in that there is no layer of apricot jam in the middle of the cake, but directly underneath the chocolate cover.”
Thanks to the internet Free Encyclopedia for the introduction above…
Anyway, since I had this interest in this cake, I have been wondering how this cake tastes.
There are Demel shops in Tokyo – but I have never dared to spend US $25 for a 10.5 cm piece.
But today, Christmas Day, we looked around, and
I found the Belgian Chocolate maker in Takashimaya Department store.
Wittamer… they had Sachertorte – 12 cm was US$ 33 dollars !
( Am writing this so you would know how expensive things are in Japan…yeah?) How many cakes can you buy in the Philippines already?
Anyway, this is what my husband bought for me as my Christmas cake.
So, here are some photos of the Sachertorte from Wittamer wrapped so beautifully….

This is my 2007 Christmas cake !
As I am writing this, we already have eaten a piece of it.
It is so good !!!
Tomorrow, I will go buy some whip cream.
Now I know why the Austrians love this cake.
